Biography

Sandy was a Member of the first Welsh Youth Parliament from 2018 to 2021.

The following was her candidate statement for election to the first Welsh Youth Parliament:

My Key Issues are:

  • Better GCSE and career advice
  • Improved school transport
  • Wifi access for all

I would be a good Welsh Youth Parliament speaker because I care about justice. I am only 14 but I have suffered discrimination in another country and have had many experiences in this life. English is my fourth language and I am learning Welsh. I know the issues that affect young people in Wales can be changed because other countries have different systems good and bad. I’ve only been in Wales for one year but I already realise there’s things the Welsh Government could change to make Wales better for young people.

The three issues I have chosen are all about justice and access to education. The first is about asylum seekers children are not allowed wifi, tv or any computer in their houses until they become refugees so they cannot do schoolwork. The second is that many young Welsh people can’t afford transport and have to walk to school up to 3 miles in the rain and in the winter dark. We can get ill and this is dangerous for girls especially. The third is that Welsh schools need to discuss GCSE options properly with young people to help them understand how their choices can affect their future career.
