Elin was a Member of the first
Welsh Youth Parliament from 2018 to 2021.
The following was her candidate
statement for election to the first Welsh Youth Parliament:
My key issues are:
- Mental health and the difficulty of accessing
support services
- Fixing the education system that excludes and
ignores those with SEND
- Support services for LGBTQ+ youth and providing
equal SRE in schools
My name is Elin Morris, I’m 16
years old and I’m so pleased to be a Welsh Youth Parliament Member.
No person deserves to be
excluded because of someone else's ignorance or ineptitude. I left school at 14
due to the inability of the current education system to adapt to the needs of
those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Despite ongoing
difficulties with education since then, I am now studying towards a degree and
I'm enjoying every moment of it.
I have anxiety and depression
and I deal with trauma caused by bullying. Consequently, I have been receiving
support from CAMHS for the past 3 and a half years, including three months in
inpatient services. I believe that if we fail to support young people with
their mental health, it will have catastrophic effects during the next few
decades.
I'm a bit of a misfit, an avid
football fan and a firm believer in social equality. I look forward to the next
few months.
