Alys was a Member of the first
Welsh Youth Parliament from 2018 to 2021.
The following was her candidate
statement for election to the first Welsh Youth Parliament:
My Key Issues are:
- Support for special needs students
- Mental health education and support
- Education on the LGBTQ+ community
My name is Alys and I go to
Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda where I am currently in year 11. I want to be a member
of the Welsh Youth Parliament because I feel that there are currently so many
issues for young people in the Rhondda, and Wales in general, that need to be
addressed, and I want to be able to help to solve as many as possible.
The key issues I have decided
to address are all important to me because I feel that they are
under-represented and that they have been and still are relevant in my life and
my friends' and peers lives.
Since moving to my
comprehensive school, i have been on the school council and school parliament
two years running, where I have been fortunate enough to meet the mayor and the Children's
commissioner for Wales, I've been class captain twice and have been on the eco-schools
council twice.
If elected, I would create as
many opportunities to consult with young people in my constituency as possible,
whether face to face, over the phone, or online via social media and e-mail,
and I would do my best to address everyone's concerns and issues.
