What happened and When?

21 February marked the first meeting of the Third Welsh Youth Parliament.

On the Friday we were very warmly welcomed to the Senedd, followed by a tour of the Siambr (the Welsh word for ‘Chamber’ and is where the debates are held in the Senedd.) Following that we had an exciting journey over the road to the Urdd to do some ice breaker activities to get to know each other ahead of the speeches on Saturday.

Saturday saw the first Plenary of the Third Welsh Youth Parliament. The session was truly inspiring, and we cannot wait to get stuck into work over the next two years. But the day didn’t stop there! After Plenary finished, we were right back into doing more activities which will hopefully foster some great friendships as well as working relationships between Members.

The First Plenary

The first Plenary is where the Youth Parliament Members decided on the three main topics that we will focus on throughout the two-year term.

Despite the grand occasion and the large audience, all Members of the Youth Parliament delivered passionate speeches in the Siambr, where we had the opportunity to share our thoughts and opinions about the topics that are of interest to us. Each topic was then put forward to be possible Youth Parliament Committee topics.

Once the speeches were done, the vote to decide on the three committee topics began.

Unveiling the Committees

After all the votes were counted, it was unveiled that the Third Welsh Youth Parliament will focus on these three issues:

  •  Cost of living and poverty
  • Public transport and active travel
  •  Crime and safety

These topics are particularly exciting because we have chosen to go in a different direction to the previous Welsh Youth Parliament, and we cannot wait to get stuck in.

The Welsh Youth Parliament and our work is such a clear example of the importance of young people’s voices in Wales. We can bring new perspectives and ideas, and we want to represent the thoughts and opinions of young people across the country.
