The next Welsh Youth Parliament election will be between 1-22 November. Why not host your own mock election in the meantime?
Welsh Youth Parliament members contribute to proposing changes in Wales, by discussing and debating on topics that are important to young people. This is a great opportunity to inspire young people to stand as a candidate for issues they are passionate about.
Do your young people want to learn more about what it means to be a Welsh Youth Parliament member? Do they want to put their debating skills to the test? Turn your classroom or youth group into a mini debating chamber.
A step-by-step guide to running your mock election:
- Decide on which topics you would like to discuss during the mock election. You can see a list of devolved topics that the Senedd are responsible for here
- Split your class into parties (3-4 per party) and ask them to name themselves e.g. ‘Ardudwy Dragons’
- Ask the parties to prioritise issues within each topic (e.g. Topic: Health Issue: To have shorter waiting times for mental health services)
- For each party to create 3-4 policies on their prioritised issues within a manifesto form (A manifesto is a written statement that explains the party’s ideas and views)
- Choose a leader for the party who will present their manifesto
- Leader of the party to present and answer questions from the audience that are relevant to their manifesto
- After all parties have presented to host a live vote
- Announce winning party (you could also think of a prize if you’d like)
